A car was waiting for them as they came back onto the promenade, a huge white Mercedes, obviously prearranged, and driven by the man called Stephan who had been there on the quayside earlier.

‘Stephan’s worked for the Coltranes for over twenty years,’ Kane explained from the front seat, as the car climbed the green and flowering hills above the town, ‘even before they sold up and joined the growing number of British expats seduced here by the climate and the greater feeling of space that France has to offer. Incidentally, they’re friends of mine—infact, the closest thing to family—as well as business associates.’

His voice held a warning, and Shannon wondered why. Didn’t he trust her to behave herself? Did he think that because of her past and the awful things the papers had written about her, she might somehow show him up?

Doubts about her self-worth threatened to undermine the hard-won self-esteem she had struggled to regain after her involvement with Jason Markham. In Kane’s eyes, she realised—and probably everyone else’s—she was still the girl who had nearly wrecked a marriage and been responsible for the tragic near-death of an innocent mother-to-be. Crazily, though, it was only Kane’s opinion of her that seemed to matter to her now, no matter what the rest of the world thought; Kane whom she wanted on her side—only he wasn’t—and, sitting behind his broad-shouldered frame, with all her purchases on the seat beside her, she wondered unhappily why he had gone to all the trouble of virtually kidnapping her to try and persuade her to return home. Was it simply for financial gain? Or did he see it as a way of ingratiating himself with Ranulph Bouvier? As a way of getting on—getting ahead in life? she thought, wondering how much her father was paying him for her return.

Instinctively, though, she knew that Kane wasn’t a man who needed to ingratiate himself with anyone. Therefore, had he meant it when he’d said that he’d been concerned about her? And if so, why couldn’t he have just sent for Ranulph? Simply told him where she was? Instead of which he had chosen to bring her with him. He’d said he hadn’t, but had he actually wanted her on board?

She was surprised at the intensity with which she wanted that to be the case. Although was it so surprising, she thought hopelessly, when she had always wanted him, even before that unfortunate episode with Jason? Her friendship with the younger man, she knew now, had been a temporary diversion, a grasping at an ideal. She had felt none of the fire and excitement in her blood that Kane ignited in her without his even being aware of it, both then and—heaven help her!—now.

Had he wanted her with him? she wondered achingly again, even though he had said he didn’t, because physically he wanted her, no matter how hard he tried to deny it. So what was responsible for his keeping a tight rein on that rigid self-control?
